Get the Look: Plaid Redux
Plaid is having a major comeback. Partly due to the revival of the punk movement in fashion post-Saint Laurent's Fall 2013 LA punk collection and Celine's luxurious revamp of the grungy fabric, plaid is oh so in at the moment. And in so many different forms: from dresses to skirts to pants to sweaters, there's definitely more than just one way to wear plaid this season, giving it a huge wardrobe update from the 90's oversized plaid shirts version. These days, it's more refined and definitely much more luxe. Although the look was a hit on the runways, the trend has also been immensely popular on the high-street. Whichever way you swing it, you can find a version of your favourite plaid items in the luxury, the contemporary and the high-street departments. What do we love most about plaid? You can dress it down with beat-up combat boots for the day tip, or dress it up with pointy-toe pumps for the evening--and it will look just as good, whichever way you choose to wear it. Here are some of Stylecab's favourite picks along with tips on how to we'd wear it this season.
The Plaid Day Dress
Left: Saint Laurent dress, Right: Karl Lagerfeld dress. If you're young, these dresses look great with a flat combat boot for day or an ankle boot for night. If you're afraid the look is too youthful for you, then trade those chunky shoes in for a sleeker pointy-toe pump; trust is, it looks just as good.
The Plaid Evening Dress
Left: Roksanda Ilincic dress, Right: Zara dress. Add a cuff on one arm and reach for your favourite pair of shoes, whatever they may be. These dresses look just as good with dainty heels as they do with chunky booties. Add a black blazer over it for work and take it off after hours, with added baubles, of course.
The Plaid Shirt
Left: Saint Laurent shirt, Right: No. 21 shirt. A plaid shirt looks great loosely tucked into skinny dark jeans on the weekend. Or, if you're feeling particularly grungy, pair it with black leather shorts, untucked. If you're more ladylike, then tuck it into a pencil skirt, as the piece by No. 21 is styled above.
The Plaid Skirt
Left: No. 21 skirt, Right: Zara skirt. One of Fall 2013's hit clothing combinations is the mini skirt with a sweater--and the combination works particularly well with a plaid mini. Pair it with ballet flats for a 'school girl' look, toughen it up with chunky boots or add some sexy appeal with a pointy-toe pump.
The Plaid Sweater
Left: Saint Laurent sweater, Right: Marc by Marc Jacobs sweater. Obviously, these sweaters work so well for an off-duty look with your favourite pair of jeans, but we love the idea of layering them over little skirts and dresses, as well, for a more modern look.
