How To Wear: The Varsity Jacket

Fall is finally rolling around and you know what that means: it's time to invest in a new jacket for the season.  If you feel you've already got a closet full of classic coats, biker jackets and trenches, then we've got a whole new style for you to try out--the varsity jacket.  So what, exactly, is a varsity jacket?  They were originally an exclusive jacket style that would be made for the boys who played on the senior-level 'varsity' sports teams in high school, usually made from sturdy materials such as leather, wool and felt.  The girls who dated these varsity players were often given their beaus' varsity jackets to wear while attending their football games or basketball games or what have you, for good luck.  Nowadays, designers have propagated the look and created it for the mainstream.  Recently, it's become a huge new trend in both menswear and womenswear.  We think it's a great piece to own in your repertoire, as it's a fantastic alternative to a basic blazer or motorcycle jacket, as you will soon learn below!  Check out some of Stylecab's favourite ways to wear the varsity jacket this season below.

The Blazer Alternative: Wearing your varsity jacket as an alternative to a basic blazer is one of the chicest ways to wear this piece.  Instead of pair it with other sporty pieces, juxtapose it with sleek tailored pieces that you'd normally think to wear with a blazer.

With a Print: Another interesting way to juxtapose the sporty element of the varsity jacket is to wear it with a feminine printed pencil skirt--such a great uptown meets downtown look.

Sleek & Chic: Keep it sleek and chic by pairing it with other wardrobe classics such as a basic silk sweater and your trusty black skirt.  Add heels and you're good to go!

Silk Bomber: When Isabel Marant first came out with this embroidered silk varsity jacket style several season ago, the fashion set went wild!  Now you can find alternatives at a friendly price from places such as Zara or H&M.  It looks great paired with a basic tee and jeans.

Over the Shoulder: The rounded shoulder shape of the varsity jacket makes it perfect for throwing over your shoulders in that 'I'm a Fashion Editor at Vogue' nonchalant kind of way.

Casual Cool: Take a cue from model/socialite Dee Hemingway and wear your varsity jacket the way that it was originally meant to be worn--casually with your favourite trousers, sneakers and a comfy sweatshirt.  Work that sporty look!

Androgynous Style: As the varsity jacket was originally for the boys who played on the more senior varsity-level teams during high school, they look great when worn in a boyish, androgynous way.

Statement Accessories: Or juxtapose them with hyper-feminine accessories such as a statement necklace, hair clip and a dainty purse!

Earn Your Stripes: The sporty look of the varsity jacket lends itself perfectly to other sporty-chic textures, such as classic breton stripes.

Geek-Meets-Jock: We love the idea of pairing the varsity jacket, an item usually reserved for the 'jocks' in high school, with a geek outfit to create a stark contrast between the two styles.  This young lady really perfects the look--10/10 from the girls at Stylecab!
